mad river

...th'first mad river lp(supposedly mastered at slightly th' wrong speed)was an amphetamine exaltation o' th' ballroom psychedelia emanatin' from frisco town th' second was a more calmed down beatnik take on yankee music traditions...country rock stylin's move easily around th' tunes but not in th' anemic fashion that would later plague th' genre, this was country played by psyched out beats, with an ear to th' past, a reverence for what had gone before...folky noodlin's come on strong with some twangin' gusto like what was happ'nin' with cats like robbie basho/john fahey around th' same late 60's years...some psych rock does turn up showin' there allegiance to th' acid/weed stance but overall this is a more laid back, contemplative wax, even allowin' space for their friend richard brautigan to recite a poem...some months earlier they'd used some o' their record company bread to print up some poetry by richard in th' shape o' 'plant this book', showin' that they were right thinkin' mellow cats who didn't forget their friends when times get hard...
