baby grandmothers

...along with such fellow visionaries the velvets/elevators/dead (when they were a credible force)/amon duul, who trod the path to enlightenment through trance rock'n'roll, swedens baby grandmothers set the contols for travelling spaceways and off they go sailing into the ether of experimental mindmeltiness...mixing in power attack ballroom psych style guitar noodling with proto hawkwindian riff and thud these cats take journeys into the clear light environment of acid wonderment...long(up to 20 minutes) jams float and meander, ever circling looking for the entranceway to play, the displacement of temporal structure indicating the HERE&NOW is always fleeting never to be truely captured, only glimpsed in passing...considering these tapes were scraped up from the long gone media summer of love they give off a fair sound that all searching rock'n'roll layabouts will be glad of...

chantal goya

...chantal covers all bases with this compilation of her contribution to 60's ye-ye and beyond...from studio big beat pop to strains of folk pop and one lullaby goes beat...gal group noise features with some sleazy R&B sax pushing chantals cooing voice along real nice (track9 is gal pop plus pinball table)...general europop vibe covers the whole thing and its all well groovy with the tunes in chronological order so as '66 starts there some early freakbeat/psychness appearing midway through...unfortunately not every tune is toppermost but there ain't no outright stinkers so its all good to go-go with the ye-ye...

france gall

...theres some super cool grooves on this coaster from this six oh ye-ye gal...from NOWpop to way out dance floor jazz with euro-pop-boom-bang to singalong ditties all the way through...this is surely the toppermost of the poppermost and can't be beat, its a real treat...suitable for fruging, twisting or just freeforming the bop...an hours worth of groovy go-go vibes from '64/'67 thats a total must from a gal you know you can trust...

guitars of the golden triangle

...one things for certain here, as certain as certain can be, that is these sounds are blasted, well and truly, one way or another these're totally gonesville...it may be the original wax is all beat up and scratches all over, or the recording/production is way into the screeching treble zone with the bass hardly registering or the ensembles all sound as if a heavy opium haze has enveloped the preceedings...its burmese pop, but pop as seen through eyes and ears that are copping licks from western pop, bits of rock'n'roll/surf/c&w and smearing the whole shebang into another sound completely...squeaky ear-spliting guitars/keyboards that are rough and ready, funky to the max/vocals give off with wailing pleas from other worlds...some of it is psychedelic, but mainly inadvertently psychedelic, but as cats who been checking the bottom line in rock'n'roll exploitation know, fake or accidental psych is way better than the 'real thing'...as mentioned the production is uniformly basement which helps give the feeling this is beeming in from another planet and of course the golden triangle sure was/is anotherworld...this is crazy daddy-o, hepped-up and gone to flip city one more time...

sonics

...woohoo, what a rocking madhouse combo these cats were and they did it for a good 10 years until the late 60's when the new music finally put a stop to their way of bashing out hotcha tunes...the sounds on this fullup coaster come from late '64 to mid '66 when they were at the top of their game with pounding numbers one after another...this is blasting racket dad with enough power to lift a rocket to somewhere the other side of the sun...cats not hep to the wrecking crew noise of this junk yard dog need to hear it forthwith and heads in the know can be advised this is the best these sides have ever sounded...a real boss hoss time is guaranteed for all, no messing, just the truth....

serge gainsbourg

...in l'anglais speaking parts of the planet this is maybe serges most known wax if not most heard (that must be his once banned disk with jane b.)...nowadays its become useful to hiphop and mix djs for its open space instro and bass modulations but it is a chipper cool listen even for nonfranco ears...the funky london studio cats groove along and some orchestral stabs punctuate serges reminiscences about young melody from across the channel...sold less than 20 thousand on release in france and much less elsewhere this is one piece of plastic that shows how listening tastes (real or imaginary) have changed...

shoes

...the time is the mid 7tees and the place is the middle of nowhere western hemisphere and four rocking heads decide its time to get down and get with it...with the best equipment they could buy they set up in the front room of the house and proceed to knock together one of the greatest lo-fi fxpedal poprock waxings of the decade...in fact its going be hard to find anything made since that sounds like this platter because its the whole sound of this nonproduction that makes it a singular listen that once heard has never been forgotten...the tunes just skate along with a total vibe that is wholly their own...cool as cool can be...

klaatu

...back in the day when these kind of things mattered there was a school of thought that held forth with the proposition that this was indeed the fab4 back together to claim their rightful position in the poppermost pantheon...such nonsense wouldn't get too much creedence in todays world of tired cookie cutter conveyor belt parade of non happening shenanigans where everything that ever was is rehashed and remixed into some kind of gloop but in mid seven oh land many folks were waiting for the second coming of fabocity and they were waiting with such fervour that this hype took hold (at least till cats had heard the disk)...sure thing boss, there is some late psych fab moves and proggedout powerpop swirling about and mighty fine it is too and backawhile it was a great lobe loobing and still holds up as a work in its own right...played back-2-back with thefirst shoes wax its the world as seen by fabfans grown up some...quite possibly their best effort...

rotaty connection

...the concept here was for chess records, who had been 'supplyin' the beats and words to countless rock and pop hits for a good decade, to get into the up and coming psychedelic pop market and score themselves some hippy bread that just had to be out there somewhere...coming up with some slightly updated girl group arrangements to hopefully fit in with the latest popgimmix and feeding some ideas into druggy tape manipulation, charles stepney came up with a top LP of acid inflected pop cover versions of recent hits and some squiggly noise here and there...assembling a pyschrock group and boosting their chops with some jazzbo session cats this is nice artpop floating experience for heads who dig the spacedout '60s stereo grooove...sold a lot of copies in their home town of chicago and surrounding areas but failed to catch on with either hippys or squares further afield, so a cult hepness grew up some 3 decades later with certain trend hopping record playing careerists, but that shouldn't put cats off who may not have heard this any time recent...also cats who dig the way it all joins up in the rock'n'roll tapestry dig the picture of the combo all laying around stoned like being in a amon duul commune vibe pose...

mamas and papas

...first things first, dig that cover, a beatnik statement on life and art/art and life, all is real but it could be phony, pop is disposable, it means nothing but its everything that matters yet it to will pass to be replaced, today is transient, not meant to last, consume or be consumed...it certainly got the guardians of morality uptight demanding censorship, keeping it hid from impressionable minds who may want a bathroom of their own(too late the coming hippys were hopeless and soapless)...these acid eating beatnix scored lucky with their hollywood take on the folkrock boom that was getting underway in 65/66, some great tuneage on this first wax all delivered with zest and a cool sense of fun wrapped in a green haze smelling sweet...sunshine harmonies rub up against some hip R&B, folk pop with sneaky hip lyrics, all played by L.A session cats who all get grooved with a high vibe bouncing, pushing to make a new NOW pop that would propel the M&Ps straight into teenage hip life and beyond...always viewed with suspicion by more hardcore hippys as capitalist entertainment they were really visiting starsailors bringing the hep vibe to the teen populace that needed to be freed from a life of conformity, a life tied as a slave of the corporation...

Friday

johns children

...yet more exploitational gear, if such a thing was still possible, from these chancers who modified the club R&B to freak the beat with some groovy outta-sight lyrics from the soon to be bopping elf, old marc himself, most likely at the time the king of all london towne chancers...pounding dancers just right for any passing whizzed up ticket to dig...carnaby street clobber, flowers and boy racers are all here ready to vibe the scene till the colours merge into the distant white light...

grassroots

...west coast heads of a certain age will remember these fab4-folk-rockers as basically being formed to be a permanent combo on hand to record the masses of tunes coming from hep&now songsmiths sloan/barri who were knocking out plenty of byrds/bob anthems since the demise of the surfing/hotrod craze...comes off as a real tasty folk-mersey explosion produced by maybe phil spector if he'd drop some acid and calm down apiece...uptempo affirmative vibes spill out from this wax and its got great studio-psych-fx on a couple of tracks and thats always welcome with these late six-oh platters...

Thursday

sagittarius

...curt and gary get busy with some artpop at the end of the 60s to try and catch that last bit of california sunshine before the dark clouds of seventies pessimism settled once and for all...listening to this shows that some pessimism has already visited because theres an element of forboding hanging large over the whole shebang...released on garys 'together' label just as that dynamic company was going under so all the stock landed in bargain bins with the result all busto crusto heads with a peeper for some hep noise had a joyful day...

cher

...all tracks on this coaster come from a time when digging the groove with cher was a boss thing and not an endurance test of proportions akin to life in the agent orange strewn jungle of the nam...no, indeed the opposite is oh so true for this is full up primo tuneage from the hollywood hippy daze of '64/7 when cher 'wrote' agony columns for messed up R&R teenies who looked to her for the guidance they weren't getting from the squares round and about their suburban tracts...ace grooves of melodrama galpop/folkrock and more sally forth from the speakers for nearly a hour in the wayback machine when there was something in the air...get hep to the sound of the sunset strip...

harpers bizarre

...orchestrated sunshine pop from the hazy-crazy-daze of the summer of love when all things seemed possible, and indeed sometimes were...these cats were originally a fab4 inspired combo and knocked a few singles out for the frisco label 'autumn records' and then hooked up with warners for 4 magnificent clever-clever-pop LPs...a chipper mellow vibe wafts through the air while these tunes are spinning and they're perfect for kicking the gong eround on those groovy afternoons when everything is melting into unknown dimensions...

nancy sinatra

...nancy was sure making some chipper rocking pop back in the mid six ohs...some punchy big beat hollywood takes on covers of hep tunes and hits all given that special vocal treatment that only nancy could...sassy and hep, authoritative and humorous all at the same time...when this daughter of nightclub cool gets done with a tune it stays done, everyone else just get out of town on that particular song, its in the bag jack...and thats the whole thing brother, its in the bag and ready to go-man-go...

sonny and cher

...tune in the boss radio to KRLA and stand by to get a super solid buzz as once long ago on perhaps now another planet these two were the hep royality of sunset strip...the whole package was the right thing at the right time, with their rigouts direct steals from the pump house gang,(for younger cats the pump house gang were a bunch of teenage surfers who hang out at windandsea and propelled beatnik fashion into surf culture) with fur vests and leather boots, chers make up and hair from the de-riguer beatnik chique, sonnys bad brian jones hair all added up somehow to be all conquering, whats happening NOW...great tuneage from the pairs great period 65/7...sonnys gal-pop productions sound real vibrant behind their singular vocal styles...real nice and groovy, excellent piece of boss wax...

geoff and maria

...when the kweskin jug ensemble finally called it a day geoff and maria grooved around for a while and as luck would have it they ended up on reprise records, home of the fugs and other weirdo folkies who somehow gravitated towards this kind of square label in the late 6 ohs...sweet potatoes is the duos second and last waxing together and its full of lazy blues and jazzy grooves with some country vibes thrown in with all the cats getting hazy and chilling with the herb...the whole LP has an enjoyable funky vibe that allows it to be played when kicking the gong around on those wasted afternoons of wistful spaciness...

Wednesday

poppy family

...extremely interesting and to a large degree fabulously entertaining compilation of an interesting, (with no apology for using that word twice in the same sentence) combo from the late six ohs...pop with lyrics that don't usually get in the pop charts with tablas and sitars colouring the numbers to give it that 'locked in time and space'vibe...some lounge type grooves and some country all help this flow in a somewhat meandering fashion along its trejectorial path...a chipper listen from a combo mainly forgotten apart from their one big hit that every cat has heard at sometime during the voyage of life... the poppies were once described in a nineties poprock/culture zine called scram, as a 'cross between the partridge family and the manson family', not too far from the hollywood dream when all said and done...sceptics and non believers could do well to get in the groove with such an groovy artifact from yester-year...

ill wind

...another one of those combos that got caught up in the over egged and willfully bloated (MGM records) bosstown hype of the late sixties which cost pretty much every band out of the surrounding boston area their chance to cozy up with the emerging underground hippy bread that was floating on campus and communes all over in '68...this is a nice folk rock groove in a slight trad and early psychedelic ballroom fashion with some moody doom vibes...well worth a few spins...

status quo

...looking back into the hazy-fazy past, back to the last summer of the sixties, through temporal adjusted psychedelic goggles a cat can espy this nifty package of orchestrated psych-pop-rock...a kind of forgotten participent in the quo cannon that at the time of release this bundle of fab4 type '67lsd damaged fairytone sound was somewhat out of date for trendworried heads and to a large degree, civilians who never really came to terms with the sound outside the pop chart entrants, but on this album there's some considerably robust playing that juices up the tuneage and make this a sufficiently worthwhile earfull and it nearly all stand up in this cynical over exposed age...a barrelful of excellent production has no doubt helped keep the sound fresh, and cats not familiar with this wax will be happily turned on...deserving of some spintime...

eagle

...after the beacon st. union called it a day and later regrouped under a new name they got into a back-to-basics mode of thinking which was in the air after bobs basement tapes had showed the way out of the heroin and war destroyed hippy dream...some rock'n'roll tuneage (50's style), complete with bo diddley beat, country hippy rock and some sneaky drug references all covered in a stonesian vibe make up this early seventies biscuit...not to be compared with the earlier incarnation but standing on its own it gives off a nice groove and they didn't ruin it by making a further half dozen rubbish wax like some would do...(includes rare b/side for cats who need the complete outpouring)...

andromeda

...formed sometime in early 1967 andromeda are a real good example of the changing face of underground sound in the transisional years '67/'70 when psych whimsy replaced the freakbeat, heavy blues replaced psych and mixed itself in with some jazz ideas to begat the misunderstood genre prog-rock(when a cat gets down to it prog was ruined by yes'n other college boy fantasies that spoke of elves and fairies in a definitely non psych manner), after prog which hung around forever it was all heads to their own discretion, punkhippy/hippypunk being the best route out from inder the burden that was the seventies...getting back to the wax in question, andromedas LP was released in '69 with a nice street level power trio blast of heavy blues progging with some '67 style vocal arragements giving it a more rounded sound, bringing in the past to soften the present and make way for the future, a nomadic eye on the older times whilst heading for an uncertain tomorrow...there's a couple of semi-lengthy suites giving off the classical ideas that early prog latched onto, the popular sounding light classics that actually hark back to the beginning of the 20th century with pastorial meets metropolitan vibes, the urban scene gently eats the countryside as modern industry marches ever onward, filled early prog with an embroidery that was too fine to last, it had to be replaced by bombast on a purely hellish ELP stance(nothing intrinsically wrong with ELP bombast when restricted to the first 4 albums but then it got too stupid for its own good)...the light classic approach is the way these cats envisioned it, being able to pump up the sound with modern ampage took the light out of the classic anyway so the real way to dig prog is most assuredly with bands such as this(unless its jazz prog then another starting point must be found with jools/brian auger type R&B proggy jazzbo)...the whole vibe is one of forward motion, but a motion that is countenanced by caution, probaby caution in the fact that uncharted territory is being explored by new recruits, cadets on the maiden voyage to the next plateau where the watchword is change, further intermingling of ideas that will eventually get too complicated to stand up and prog will lumber under its own unnecessary weight, but now with andromeda we see prog with everything to live for, everything to aspire to without any pretense, without commercial leanings...cats who dig the elias hulk/czar style heavy blues splat might wish to more than dig this, its the sophisticated elder cousin(sophisticated being in relative useage only), the cousin with examination papers marked with a pass (only just, but a graduation all the same), a mild complication of ideas all brought into line by the molding of psych learning on a substantial blues footing, a grounding from which to fly, a nest that can supply sustenance and energy for the long trip to unknown days...andromeda are most likely better than the LP shows due to studio conditions, conditions that flumox many cool combos to the point of freezeing up,but the evidence on display can only give testimony to some new creativity, a new spark from the old rock'n'roll fire, ashes refurbished with the strike of one last match, the match that relights embers of lost chords...

Tuesday

electric wizard

...as the universe darkens and the night creatures creep through the gloom intent on spreading the gospel of doom all that can be heard is the monumental stoned out riffing jams that just pulverize and crush with immense clouds of sweet smoke...droning and droning, filling the space with the heaviest sludge, the like of which hadn't been seen for many a moon...one of the best of nineties stoner, different mix from the original release and well deserving of a few spins by all psycheads...

...watch out kids, arriving from deep, deep within the slime ridden murky depths of the psychedelic rock'n'roll basement, coming slowly up from buried under megatons of sweet smoke, equiped with gigantor riffs heavier than the universe and almost certainly louder than god or blue cheer...repellent ugly primordial noise from before the dawns of time, before the formation of solid matter, breaking through into the 7th dimension the worlds collapse from the immense power of the wizard...blasting inward towards the centre of the cranial matter, any flipped out stoner cat going get a mad whoosh from being exposed to the poisonous sludge that drips from the speakers...once again the commandment from on high is this disk to be played at stun volume or higher...
